James Byrd
One
of the major components of James Byrd's art work is his skilled use of
vibrant color as applied to steel and glass. Technically, the colors
are a formulated blend of ground colored glass sifted onto prepared areas
of 16-gauge steel panels that are then heated to 1450 degrees, thereby
melting the glass and adhering it to the steel panels. Each piece undergoes
multiple firings which alter colors at varying stages. Through manipulation
of the medium, Byrd exposes various layers of vibrant opaque colors and
softens areas with sprinklings of translucent glazes.
Aesthetically, the results become a blend of predictable and spontaneous
color and design elements: dashes and swirls of saturated sparkling colors
intermingle
with hazy pastel hues to create the final durable high gloss
surface. These pieces use modern technology, available glass
colors, and a meticulous control of the craft to achieve works with an
unprecedented visual identity: a prismatic array of vivid pinks, aquas,
raspberry reds, oranges, violets and greens imbue glass and steel with
a dynamism and immediacy unique to the medium.
