Nationally
known potter and teacher, Steven Branfman works in the Raku technique.
His vessels are wheel thrown. Larger pieces are done using a Korean throwing
technique called "coil and throw" where large coils are carefully attached
to the rim of a base and pulled up continuing the piece.
Raku
involves the removal of the ware from the kiln when the glaze has reached
it's molten state. Tongs are used to move the vessel from the kiln to a
metal chamber where it is subjected to changing atmospheric conditions.
Utilization and control of this "post firing" step is what differentiates
Raku from conventional firing practices. The result is dark unglazed surfaces,
metallic lusters and other unique surface effects.
Steven's pots display a variety of textures as he works to make his ware as much a tactile experience as a visual one. "I enjoy the challenge of working large, not just to achieve size but to arrive at the right size for a particular piece. It is an aesthetic decision as sure as choosing the texture or color. The actual Raku firing is like a dance that when choreographed well flows into a statement of beauty. It feels good when done right!"
