Albert Beach
It
has always been my custom to make images of my surroundings. I have
been amazed at the diverse appearance of areas located in close proximity
to major cities. After moving only ten minutes from one area of Los
Angeles to another, I felt as if it were like moving to Porto Fino, Italy.
The homes and landscape had a Mediterranean air and were strongly imbued
with a sense of fantasy.
Over
the years I experimented with various media and content, but I always returned
to the view from my window. In retrospect, the images grew to represent
a desire for security -- a safe and beautiful "home," free from urban blight
and the problems of this rapidly changing part of the world.
The intaglio prints shown here are part of a suite of etchings from
the nineties. They represent
cityscapes where color represents the intensity of life in the areas in
which I have lived. Often the image is somewhat abstracted to create
a solid and simple design.
